Life is full of inconsistencies, mysteries, mistakes, and nonsense. Stories will, of course, have plot holes and the characters will behave in ways that you don't understand; it's a reflection of the chaos of life.
There's no way to not have plot holes and inconsistencies in stories. Looking for logic in a fictional story is wasted energy. If fictional stories were airtight and grounded in a definitive reality, they would be boring. Art is a means of expression and exploration. The characters aren't robots; they are representations of what is inside us. The plots aren't calculations; they are dreams & feelings. Even when stories try to mimic the real world, we have to remember that life is mistakes and unpredictability. Life is ever-changing and brilliantly bonkers!
A good story should transcend time. It should be able to be applied to any social/political/chronological context, because stories are about human nature. Critics get so wrapped up in what's cannon, what's logical, etc. It's just fiction; it's all silliness from someone's mind. Don't take it so seriously.
Trying to make sense of the fantastical psychedelic nonsense universe is futile. Don't apply boundaries to art; let it stumble around, lose form, and melt into meaninglessness. We find more truth in emptiness than we do in logic. We find more of ourselves without identity. Let movies be messy.
